A Day in the Life of a Live In 24 Carer

Michaela is a Live In 24 carer who lives with and cares for an 84 year old female client suffering from Alzheimers. Michaela's client gets up between 8 and 9 in the morning, and Michaela helps her with personal care including washing and toileting. She administers prescribed drugs and also does domestic duties involving cooking, cleaning and shopping. Michaela also takes her client out to social activities to enhance her quality of life.

Michaela said it was difficult living with her client while they got to know each other, but after about two weeks she was accepted and they formed a close bond. Michaela's client says she's lucky to be with Michaela after spending three weeks in a mental health nursing home. She often gets confused so Michaela often thinks on her feet and adapts what she's saying to try and put her client at ease.

Michaela has worked with Live In 24 for three years and has previous experience working as an au pair and working in a nursing home. When she joined the Live In 24 team she undertook the comprehensive training programme to equip her with the necessary skills to be a 24 hour live in carer.

When asked what her favourite part of the job as a live in carer was, Michaela answered, "I don't see it as a job, (the client) feels like one of my friends; she's a pleasure to care for and always thanks me for everything I do for her."

For people considering joining the Live In 24 team Michaela offers the following advice, "You will need patience, flexibility and communication skills."

A live in home care attendant is there not only for physical support, but to be a close companion to the client as well.
